Recent research clearly indicates that excellent employment opportunities will exist in the Canadian marine industry, both now and in the future. With perhaps as many as a quarter of all marine technicians expected to retire within 5 years, the opportunities for technicians looks especially good. Other available positions include careers in sales, marina management, service and parts department management. The locations range from BC to Atlantic Canada including excellent positions in Ontario. Job opportunities exist in both cottage country and in the GTA.

Boating Industry Canada’s Newsweek electronic newsletter continues to offer free ‘help wanted’ advertising for companies that are hiring marine industry professionals. Position:  Dock Master – Seasonal – Full Time – May to Oct

Location of Work:  Sportsman’s Inn Resort & Marina, Killarney, ON

Description & Scope of Work: Enthusiastic, customer oriented individual required to manage all aspects of dock operations for the 140 slip transient marina located at the start of the North Channel on Northern Georgian Bay. Integration with the pub, restaurant, and resort hotel is vital.   This is an excellent opportunity for someone seeking greater experience in the hospitality industry in the fun atmosphere of summer in Killarney.   Duties include: management of dock reservations; docking boats; fuelling boats; water, power & pump-outs; managing dock shop sales of meats, produce, ice, dry goods and Sportsman’s Inn memorabilia; managing dock shop and fuel inventory; managing guest services for boaters – washrooms, showers, fitness centre, take-out, garbage removal, etc.; supervision and training of dock hands; enforce rules and ensure regulatory compliance; 

Qualifications:  Experience docking boats of all sizes; hospitality industry experience;  experience managing a small team of employees; pleasure craft operator card; knowledge of boats, navigation, and local waterways (preferred); marine radio certificate; excellent organizational skills; excellent people skills; strong focus on customer satisfaction;  fuel handling experience; high school diploma (college preferred).

Position:  Retail Sales Service & Inventory Manager - Specialty Retail

Location of Work:  Greater Toronto Area, ON

The Rigging Shoppe is a Canadian, family owned marine retail store that has been servicing southern Ontario boaters since 1969. Our team of staff understands boats and their associated parts intimately. We service first time boat owners, power boaters, cruising sailors and competitive sailboat racers. Description and Scope of Work:  Perform cash handling and cash register functions in an accurate and consistent manner.  Manage inventory by receiving, merchandising in retail store and organizing in stock storage area. Demonstrate a calm attitude while serving customers during peak spring season.  Display a "customer comes first" attitude.  Share in an environment that encourages open and continuous communication among all staff.

Qualifications:  Sailing experience required and customer service in a retail environment an asset.  Ability to manage inventory operations independently in a fast-paced environment.  Superior operational, organizational and problem solving skills in a customer-service environment.

Position:  Marina Manager (Contract to cover a maternity leave)

Location of work: Outer Harbour Marina, Toronto, ON

Description and Scope of Work:  Supervises Marina staff, interviewing and hiring new employees, carrying out performance appraisals, directing the training and development of staff and carrying out disciplinary action. Develops, recommends and implements a Marina operating budget, monitoring progress throughout the year. Implements Marina Capital Budget and Plan.  Develops, recommends and implements new department policies and procedures as required.  Coordinates launches and haul outs. Provides tours of the site to potential customers and sells contracts. Responds to customer enquiries, giving out information and solving problems. Oversees repairs and maintenance of facilities. Reviews and verifies the daily cash report.  Oversees the leasing of Marina space. Manages services such as signage, cleaning, maintenance, parking, safety inspections, security and snow removal. Negotiates contracts with service providers. Coordinates Outer Harbour Marina involvement at boat shows including negotiating price, size and location of booth, and ensuring that the booth is staffed. Prepares a variety of reports and statistics.

Minimum Qualifications:  Minimum of 3 years in a management role, preferably in the Marina/Boating industry.  College/University Degree in a related field.  Excellent customer service, interpersonal and communication skills. Excellent organizational, analytical and planning skills. Strong leadership skills and experience working in a unionized environment. Bilingual in French is an asset. Computer literate. Valid Class “G” Ontario Driver’s License. Standard First Aid/CPR. Able to swim. Toronto Harbour Permit or ability to acquire within 1 month.

Position:  Operations Manager

Location:  Vancouver, BC

Description and Scope of Work:  Joining a highly specialized and well respected marine repair and build facility the successful candidate will become involved in all aspects of the business including: participating in and directing GRP yacht repairs/parts build/new yacht build, organizing, supervising, assisting and teaching yacht repair/new build labourers to meet this company’s standards, evaluating complex project timelines;planning labour/material requirements for multiple repair and new build projects simultaneously completing routine office duties: accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, tax payments, basic monthly bookkeeping using existing methods and systems,providing exemplary customer care for private clients; liaise with insurance brokers and underwriters regarding claims documentation requirements and payment, organizing and executing a cost effective marketing plan for new build yacht sales and financing.
 
Minimum Qualifications: Formal education or experience in marine GRP repair/build is not mandatory; however, a familiarity with the marine pleasure craft industry (primarily sail) is expected as well as some post secondary marketing education.  In addition excellent communication and organizational skills are definitely needed. An above average aptitude for manual labour is a must.  Ability to fit in to an existing small business structure is also very important. Strong interpersonal skills to communicate easily with repair technicians as well as highly educated professionals must be demonstrated.

Compensation: The successful applicant will be offered a hands-on labour position with commensurate compensation to begin learning every aspect of the business.  Promotion/compensation will depend on aptitude and intelligence but will be unlimited for the right candidate.
